Families begin the process by submitting an application, a physician form, and reference letters. After a virtual interview, 4 Paws reviews the child’s needs and daily routines. Once accepted, the family signs an agreement outlining the next steps and begins preparing for the fundraising journey.

Families commit to raising about $20,000 to help cover the cost of breeding, training, and placement. Every dollar goes directly toward preparing a highly trained service dog for Luca. Luca will be getting a Golden Retriever or a Labrador Retriever.

Once fundraising is complete, 4 Paws begins the process of pairing Luca with a dog whose temperament and skills are the perfect fit. Training is specifically tailored to each individual, so no two dogs are trained the same. Training takes 18-20 months, and we’ll find out who Luca’s dog is only three weeks before we go out for our placement.

Luca and our family will travel to Xenia, Ohio, for a 10-day, intensive training class. There, we’ll meet the dog for the first time, learn commands, and practice working as a three-handler team — culminating in a special graduation ceremony.

4 Paws remains connected with families through virtual check-ins, training refreshers, and yearly recertification to ensure the partnership continues to thrive for years to come. As Luca grows and his needs evolve, his service dog can receive additional training to learn new skills that continue supporting his independence and safety.
